PH rub, what tape?

So I just got done sanding and putting rustoleum over my PH rub spots, where the rubber gasket rubs the paint and metal on the top and rail, and I want to tape it- but what kind of tape?

Surprising how many times "tape" is used on the forum, but search has only turned up that SMB uses a "thick black tape". I've got Gorilla tape, but I'm worried about residue if I ever remove it. Anything else I think wouldn't stick for long with temps, dirt and wet.

Has anybody taped themselves, and what did you use?

My Van is white, so I tried some white tape similar to the Gorilla tape but the elements eventually got it to peel off..

So I found the white colored truck bed coating and so far it's held up from the rubbin..

Re: PH rub, what tape?

3M clear tape that's used to protect paint from chips. That stuff is amazingly resistant to abrasion, it will turn yellow and start to crack after 5~6 years out in the sun though.

I think it's called Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film, I've got it on 2 of my vehicles, one is in the garage all the time, and it's still perfect after ~5 years, the other is kept outside and it's just started to loose it's color and crack, but it's still doing it's job, just looks ugly.

Since the stuff blends in, it's hard to get a pic of it.

Jeremiah, I'd try a peel and stick backed thin metal or hard plastic. Lot's of choices at McMaster Carr.

I believe Sportsmobile West uses Avery UHA (Ultra High Adhesion) tape to cover the wear areas. They use one of these...

Re: PH rub, what tape?

I used the Gorilla tape and it's working - sort of.
Problem is, the force of the penthouse pushing on the tape is causing it to "slide" out of position and leave a gummy mess behind. The mess is easy to remove with solvent or Goo Gone.
I'm going to try one of the other tapes.

Re: PH rub, what tape?

How about helicopter tape? (like is used on the leading edge of rotor blades. I think it's related, if not the same, as the stuff Sheepshagger has on his Cobra.

Re: PH rub, what tape?

When I have to redo the areas I might use Herculiner. The kits come with a small roller and I think I'll mask it off and roll it on. I herc'ed the tub of my YJ and the entire frame on my Tacoma- the stuff is bulletproof and holds up like no other. I suspect it'll seal just as good.

Re: PH rub, what tape?

I just ordered some Helicopter Tape from:

http://www.findtape.com/category112/sur ... tapes.aspx

While ordering from them I also ordered some non-skid tape for the PH top. I'd hate to slip off there while I am up washing the top.
