Poptop at windy Burning Man

Back to manual PH failure... so what if it comes down? Apart from being scary I can't really see anyone taking major damage from a dropping top. Mechanically it would be most of the way down before falling (to the point where pulling down becomes the top dropping) and at that point it can't be more than a few inches from the body asleep in the PH bed. When it snaps shut it seems like a lot, but remember it's not going all the way to the bed- it's a lot closer to that breakover where it really starts accelerating down. I suppose if I made a habit of sleeping on my back I'd be worried about taking it in the nose, but otherwise it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Now... an electrical failure causing the electric PH motor to run in the "close the top" direction while you're asleep on the PH bed... that's something you can lay awake worrying about. Imagine, even after the house battery dies and the motor stops trying to crush you, you're still not going anywhere because unlike the manual you can't move the top and whatever brought it down to climb out.

We are headed to Burning man as well. We are more concerned with the dust. It is like fine powder and you will never get it out of your van per se so make sure you close things up with the funnel clouds come. Have fun! We are stoked to be going this year in our new (92) SMB.

I went to burningman with my wife on our honeymoon and we opted to rent a cruise america rv instead of taking our rb50 ph and next year we will be taking the SMB. Cruise america sucked and our shower didn't work. And it leaked. We will be making an evaporation pond so that we can shower and dump our dish water. If anyone is planning on going again I say let's get a few together and have a SMB camp.

There are more than a few sportsmobiles to be seen at Burningman. My camp of about 50 people had two. Mine and a tricked out 06 4x4. I took mine last year in 2010 and had no issues. My PH stayed up for 10 days straight on top of the ezup and other camp infrastructure I had setup around my van. An evap pond can reduce the amount of greywater you have to bring back but honestly I think is just a waste of time. I would rather just put it back into my empty water containers and worry about it later.


Even if we didn't end up in one big camp together it would be fun to have a planned meetup and meet all you Sporty burners out there.

I second that. We are hoping to go this year again. We have been looking into trailers and also art cars, the bikes will probably be our route. A question about the pop top... Did you do anything to support it in the wind or use a tarp to keep some of the dust out? I was thinking about making a support/cover for the canvas with the yurt foam and furnace filters as to get a breeze with minimal dirt. I just saw some sleeve screens that go over the drivers and passenger window frames so that the wind can pass but no bugs. A must at the lakes but cool for burningman.
