Pop top weight considerations

Something to consider I learned the hard way. The more weight you put on the top the more careful you need to be when raising it on a side slope. I inherently understood this but my wife didn't. She raised it all the way to keep the dog cool and it tweaked the whole mechanism about 3 inches. Had to apply a field expedient repair of jacking up the opposite side of the van and tying it off to a tree and the lowering it slowly. Mostly effective but I like the idea of internally strengthening the tubes.

Hey Wanlarry...We had to take our SMB in to SMBNorth b/c we were getting some 3-8 inch 'drop(s)' of our roof as we were bringing it down...DRYYYYYYY tubes were our problem/catching on the side of main tube attached to scissor tubes, so dry it would catch one side, then weight would drop it to next etc...SO 1st off, LUBE!!!!!
Second, when we are not carrying our 4 thule racks, 165 w solar panel, (goofy) satellite dome, canoe and all its supplies like life jackets/paddles/fishing poles/gear the roof really does go up and down much smoother, but we NEED our stuff (lol)...here are a couple of pics...

ps lock for the canoe too...never too careful, had friend who had kayaks stolen off his trailer while sleeping inside...
pss.yes an excuse to post pics of Sporty (thx!)

Glad to see I'm not the only one carrying all their worldly possession on their roof...

I'm trying to get as much up there as practical, but still being reasonable. That being said, I'm starting to feel like this guy:

We finally put everything on top, which meant more than 200 lbs. The lid lifted but I didn't like the sounds so we're working on plan B, shuffling gear between the Chaser and the van top. As Glen noted, solar panels and rack gear alone eat up the carrying capacity. We went out last week with everything on top and took it off for camping but we weren't traveling so it was just part of our typical basecamp routine: setup tent, move gear into it, do things. Reverse.
