Pulled over for not having mudflaps in WA!

Had the red and blue lights flasing tonight I'm my rear view mirror,on way back from great days snowboarding at White Pass. WA State Trooper stated I needed mudflaps down to height of my axles.

Guess I'll have to buy some. Anyone recommend any?

Re: Pulled over for not having mudflaps in WA!

It is a WAC requirement, I was reading it the other day. Of course they don't give tickets to the thousands of SUVs without mudflaps....

Was it just a fix it ticket?

Here is a link from a prior thread on mudflaps:

I actually kinda like the frame mounted ones at the bottom, not sure if they would fit.

I think you want to mount them a fair way back from the wheels so they don't get caught under the tires if you are backing up. At least that's what we do on rally cars.

Just a warning no ticket, and he was a very polite trooper. Thanks for the info, he told me it applies to all lifted vehicles, and he is often on SR 12. I'm on this route a lot so I better get some flaps

Don't forget Utah likes their mud flaps too.

Re: Pulled over for not having mudflaps in WA!

Looked into this mudflap issue a bit more for our build. Comments welcome, especially from any law experts.

It looks like:

A) Washington State would not require mud flaps if you have fender flares (eg Bushwackers)
http://www.wsp.wa.gov/traveler/passequip.htm

Fender Flares & Anti-Spray Devices
Required - All vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers must be equipped with fenders, covers, flaps, or splash aprons adequate for minimizing the spray or splash of water and mud to the rear if the vehicle.

B) Utah
http://le.utah.gov/~code/TITLE41/htm/41_06a163300.htm

If I'm reading this correctly, Bushwacker-type fender flares would also satisfy the Utah mud flap law.

"41-6a-1633. Mudguards or flaps at rear wheels of trucks, trailers, truck tractors, or altered motor vehicles -- Exemptions.
(1) (a) Except as provided in Subsection (2), when operated on a highway, the following vehicles shall be equipped with wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons behind the rearmost wheels to prevent, as far as practicable, the wheels from throwing dirt, water, or other materials on other vehicles: ....
(2) Wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons are not required:
(a) if the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer is designed and constructed so that the requirements of Subsection (1) are accomplished by means of fenders, body construction, or other means of enclosure
; or

Note that this phrasing/subsections doesn't put any size requirements re the fenders.

C) Broader legal question:

Related to these sorts of laws about details of a vehicle build, what is required of visitors to a state?

Legally if you drive on WA roads of need to comply, practically.... You are not to likely to be hassled.

See para 7, you have to have 75 degrees of fender coverage to rear from vertical centerline of wheel, so a lifted vehicle is basically going to need mud flaps:

Re: Pulled over for not having mudflaps in WA!

yep I agree I need to get some, 1 less excuse for the troopers to NOT pull me over!. Anyone installed removable flaps? Are they gonna last and not rattle and look crappy? I've had flaps before on my lifted 85 4runner - a pain in the butt, they bend and get caught up in the snow, and snap off when reversing!! the reason I wanna remove them for snow and trails off highway use.
question: I think WA State only requires rear mud flaps? am I right?

Nice clean truck, invisible flaps and you get stopped. Would you still like the clear ones?

Re: Pulled over for not having mudflaps in WA!

I don't buy they would look that good after any use- it looks more like a put-it-on-at-the-show item, so it doesn't get dirty; I'm thinking scratches and scuffs and soon that crystal clear invisible flap looks like garbage.

Unless they're glass....
