Replacement penthouse roof for older vans

Hey All,

We have an 89 Ford SMB that I would love to re-canvas. SMB indicated that this is no problem (other than driving to and hanging out in Huntington Indiana for a couple days!) but said if the penthouse fiberglass roof broke in the process then we are up the creek as they no longer can make that roof. Is this true for all the SMB locations? Any folks gone through this replacement process?

Right now the existing canvas and windows still work but is beginning to show it's age. Can't believe that SMB doesn't support older designs

Thanx!

Not experienced a replacement, but the tops are sandwiches of ply and fiberglass. I would get more details on the concern (what has been their experience?). Glass can always be patched, but if they drop it from the ceiling and totally mash it...... Replacement should be fairly straightforward. There are posts with pictures here about roof leaks and peeling back the front part of the surround (Jage?). You would likely get all new roof bolting hardware as well. Does it have any cracks in it now (unlikely, but worth verifying).

Cheers

SMB Indiana no longer has the roof molds for the older body style (prior to 92) and thus said they could not replace the roof if it broke in the re-canvasing process. There are no obvious cracks and it hasn't leaked but sure would be a bummer to have my roof cracked. I wouldn't hesitate to get a new roof if needed but doesn't seem to be one available. Will contact them again and I guess the Texas and California sites.

Hopefully there are others out there that have experience with this as well.

Thanx bunch.
