Replacing my solar controller ...help would be appreciated!

Hello

I’m replacing my solar controller because my current one’s display broke. I’ve disconnected the panels but I’m checking to see if I also need to disconnect the battery to install the new controller. Part of me sees no reason to disconnect the battery because either way the power will be brought to the controller in steps (positive lead and then Negative lead). I’d have no problem disconnecting the battery but it’s a real pain to get to (have to crawl under the van, put a jack underneath the tray, unbolt the tray, drop the battery, etc). Just trying to avoid an unnecessary pain. Ha!

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I’d know that I should only connect the panels if the battery is installed and connected.

Thanks

Lars

Lars,

Is your incoming power fused, or through a circuit breaker? That may be the easiest spot to interrupt the power.

Hello Herb

I actually just kept the battery plugged in and made sure I didn’t cross any lines when installing the new controller. All went smoothly.

Thanks for the reply
