I can't imagine having done this job without my $100 Harbor Freight transmission jack. I've used it for fuel tank removal and battery replacement so far. Some day I may use it for a transmission??

Worth every penny.

Great information everyone.

That picture is classic.
The harbor freight jack was my first idea, but I know I would never use it again.
Thanks again for the tips.

Mod your floor jack plate like this and you have a very manageable solution:
Just make sure to use really good screws or through bolt it with washers. I lifted two group 31's without any issue.

Another great idea.

I don't have a floor jack, and am trying to avoid buying anything.

I do have a bottle jack, milk crates, wood, and two car ramps though.

Thanks

Careful what you wish for!

Blair, have you gone to an auto parts store to see if you can just rent one? Most rent tools and they sell jacks. They'll probably rent you one.

Go on craigslist and buy a motorcycle/ATV jack. Then buy a motorcycle because you don't use the jack enough for just batteries.

I bought a $1500 motorcycle on Craigslist and thought it would be dumb to spend $30K on a van to haul it.

...well.....here we are........

You can probably buy a floor jack on CL for $10. Or go to Harbor Freight, get the jack, use it, then return in.

I did it, and it was real easy!

Local auto parts store didn't rent tranny jacks, didn't want to buy any jacks, and the code by which i live my life would not allow me to buy something with the intention of using and returning.

Going to see if I can figure out how to post some pics.
