I know it's an old thread but it wouldn't be too hard to steel out the rear body to add structural integrity, that's what we've been doing to 'floppy' fibreglass hot rod bodies for years. Corvettes are fibreglass. Unfortunately Ford dropped the diesel however GM still offers it.

Interesting, is there any update on this project? I don't recall seeing on the SMB website anywhere.

Found the SMB Classic thread here on the forums, and the SMB info on their website. Sorry folks.

Looks like they do still plan to produce it! I was checking out SMB's revised website and they feature it, and plan to have it in production in late 2018.

I think the owners/decision makers at SMB West have a real love for the classic E-van, as the business case by itself doesn't look attractive. They probably won't sell a lot of them, and they have a long waiting list for Sprinter work as it is.

I think the Econline 4x4, and its ability to be a true expedition vehicle, brought a lot of name recognition to SMB. It's basically their flagship car. Just like Shelby Mustangs, Corvettes, and other halo cars, it brings in potential customers who otherwise wouldn't thought of them, even those said customers ultimately end up buying something a little less.

Plus, it sets them apart from every other Tall-Van converter, who have surely captured a lot of potential market share.
