Rhino Lining Tube Steps

I've been throwing this idea around for a while and wondering if anyone has experience with it. I have the tube "steps" under the doors on my van and they are forever getting chipped and scratched from rocks throwing up at the wheels.

I've had a bunch of truck beds Rhino lined and absolutely loved the stuff and I'm a big believer in it but I don't think I've ever done aluminum parts.

I know they can preserve the "grip" on the steps by dialing in the chunks in addition to the checkering that's already on the steps but does anybody know if it "sticks" to aluminum as well as steel?

Tube Steps

bryanlaws ,
I used the Dupli Color Truck Bed Liner Spray to texture the top portion of my Aluminess Rear Bumper and think this would be a great solution for the chipping of the paint on your Hoop Steps . I purchased at Pep Boys for less than $8.00 per can and have found that it is quite durable and it lays down nice as well as dries quickly .

Thanks Greggde.

I went and talked to the Rhino Lining guy and he actually talked me out of it. The "3D" nature of the steps would create issues that he didn't think would end well. He sent me down the street to our local powder-coating shop who does great work and I talked to them. They have a new "wrinkle" coating that he thought would stand up to the stones pretty well. Not too expensive for all three so I decided to give it a try and see how long it lasts.

If it chips off soon I'll go your route with the spray on or brush on bedliner stuff and just lay it on thick in the exposed rock parts.

I'll post pics when I get them back tomorrow hopefully.

The biggest problem is that the steps are "scooped" out. If it was just a bar it would be easy. It will start to run along the edges and they don't finish well. I knew this to be true before I went to talk to him but he explained it far better than I can without having it in my hands showing you.

The good news is that I picked up the powder-coated steps today and I have to say, they look awesome. Now, I'm not kidding myself, they damn well better look awesome straight off the factory floor and freshly coated. Time will tell whether they hold up to the rock beating. I'll take a pic because the finish they put on it is really nice. He called it a "wrinkle coat" but I wish the bumpers had been coated that way from the factory.

Anyway, I'm taking the van out this weekend for the end of fishing season where I will be putting some fairly fast miles on gravel roads so if it's going to chip, I'll know right away.

We have talked to the local Line-X shop and we have plans at some point to do our entire 1990 Nissan 4WD pickup exterior in Line-X. They can make most any color now and even do multiple colors.

I just installed my ladder and thought it needed some grip... I'll just add some spare skateboard grip tape on it. I broke off one of those stainless steel bolts though trying to tighten it. Sucks, but I'll get over it.

Re: Rhino Lining Tube Steps

OK, 7 months later and I have to say, my hoops steps with the powder coat still look 100% awesome. I couldn't find a chip or a scratch on them and when they get washed, they look good as new.

I recommend it to anyone that is tired of repainting their hoop steps. It would be absolutely cool to have the whole bumper system done but that's just plain overkill.

The powdercoat guy called it a "wrinkle finish". Not shiny and it has some texture to it so the grip is still good.

If anyone in the Greater LA Area is interested, the guy I used was in Oxnard and I think their name was Applied Powdercoat.

Re: Rhino Lining Tube Steps

What kind of cost to get them wrinkle powder coated?
