Roof rack noise

Anyone come up with a fix for the howling from roof racks? I can't put an air damn due to led light bar

bajavoodoo.com is where I got it. It's not very high quality . I don't recommend them. Any good brands out there? I'd add affordable but I know affordable means junk nowadays

I know wrapping a cord around crossbars helps with noise, but not sure if that would help with your rack. I have an aluminess rack and it makes noise at 65+mph.

Hmm I'd like to get a different rack. Sucks spending 2500 for a rack and when you drive down the freeway all you here is it . Do you know of any other brands out there?

This is what I've done in the past. Spiral wrapping rope or a bungee around the crossbars has cut down on wind noise for me. Bungees could vibrate off so rope is likely better.

I had the Yakima Megawarrior before the Aluminess and I never heard any noise from it. It was also way towards the back so that obviously made a difference. My Aluminess rack comes all the way to the front, so thats why the noise is so noticeable. I think if you get one that doesn't cover all the way to the front, it would make a huge difference.

The load warrior/megawarriors both have fairings.....

I notice a huge difference in wind noise on my yakima crossbars with and without fairings. I have crossbars on the van and the daily driver.

Here are some typical shapes and associated coefficient of drag (Cd) for each shape.

Less drag=less wind noise....

I'm not sure why the sphere has a range of Cds....I suspect that the .5 number is a cylinder, since airfoils typically are about 1/10th 1/12th the drag of a cylinder....that's why they make fancy bladed bicycle spokes.

It's all about reducing the wake behind the bars.....airfoils put the airflow back together cleanly with little wake.

Yakima makes a snap-on plastic airfoil...you could try that....or fabricate something.
