Rugged Off Road 4x4 Van

I see things like this from time to time on Bring a Trailer.com and always think if someone wanted to really go off road camping in something different than a van then something like this could do it. I am not sure how great it would be on the trip to the place to go off roading (better bring your ear plugs) but it would go far once it go there. I am surprised its a gas engine and only 12 volts. And you think breaking down with a Ford in a small town is difficult to get parts. Needs a Pop top to blend in.

Oh yeah I have nothing to do with this, not mine, not going to be, whatever I am supposed to say.I just posted it for fun.

Re: Rugged Off Road 4x4 Van

Thanks for posting that.

I got interested in the Volvo C303 for a while. They're kind of pokey on the road, though. Overall they seem like a promising rig for the right use.

Re: Rugged Off Road 4x4 Van

The guy selling it claims it can go 78mph, that is faster than either a Unimog or a Pinzgauer.
Personally I'm not sure I would want to 58mph in it.

Here is another nicer one from Bringatrailer.com

It was on ebay but now its not.

Yeah, I was reviewing the thing -- I think I was thinking about Unimog speeds. The C303 is supposed to be faster. I'd love to drive one sometime, but I'm not ready to fall out of love with my SMB yet. I'm picking it up in a few days with its fresh 4x4 conversion.

Re: Rugged Off Road 4x4 Van

If you have a SMB you won't want one of those unless its for an additional off roader.

What 4x4 system did you go with?

I have most of what I need to do a U Joint Off Road system. I really want to do mine this fall as I was hoping to have it done by this spring (and last fall) but didn't get to it before we started using it again. At least so far this year we don't have any new travel plans so I know where I can go without needing anything but limited slip and traction control, I hope.

Re: Rugged Off Road 4x4 Van

It's being converted by Advanced 4x4 in Salt Lake City.

If you're doing yours yourself, I take my hat off to you.

I know it's doable but I don't have it in me to wrestle with all those heavy parts.

Best of luck with the conversion. One good thing about it is you'll be fully responsible and get all the blame and/or credit for everything. Plus you'll know how to work on it all. Which, if you did it right, won't be necessary.
