Scangauge question...

I went with the PVM and it seemed to work. What gauges do you guys monitor? I like the tach, trans temp so far. MPG is kind of all over the place but will keep it on just to see what I am doing going down the freeway. Need 1 more good one to watch.

Water temp
Inlet air (When you are moving it's virtually identical to OAT)
Manifold pressure

and sometimes MPG

There are more than 4 that I like to look at. I basically always have LOD showing, usually GPH and/or MPG, and switch among the others:

• LOD - engine load % (when it gets above 90%, expect the transmission to downshift)
  GPH - gallons per hour
  MPG - miles per gallon
  HPR - horsepower
  TFT - transmission temperature
  FWT - coolant temperature
  VLT - battery voltage

My rear view mirror shows the outside air temperature, so I don't use the Scangauge for that.

See now I think MPG and especially GPH are pointless and useless. I slapped my SG in just before the last trip and I've gotten everything from 1.2 MPG to 28.4 MPG in high range (I'm ignoring the 9999 from true coasting) and the GPH changes more than twice a second- what's the point of either? No human mind can possibly interpret the numbers to anything coherent (especially GPH).

If they were cumulative sure, I could get an idea about how lead-footed affects my current trip, but I'd need a spreadsheet to analyze even a minute of travel.

I usually monitor the following

Transmission temp
Water temp
Engine load
RPM

and sometimes,

Voltage
Inlet air temp

I haven't done the proper calibration to accurately monitor MPG yet.

Yeah, often not really all that useful short term. But when the cruise control's on (highway driving), the values are reasonably steady. And I like to see just how much my instant MPG changes driving in 4th gear (my top gear) vs. 3rd at the same speed and throttle input on the highway.

And GPH -- helps convince me to shut off my engine when I'm idling too long in traffic.

I still watch the MPG but it is what you guys say it is. But I was surprised to see what a little load such as my trailer does to the mileage. I live in a large flat valley, but if I were living in the hills I wouldn't use MPG at all. Because I have separate EGT, Trany, and turbo boost gauges all I really measure is water temp and voltage. Would love to have a oil pressure and oil temp selection on it. Heck I wish it had a clock.

Incidentially my Scanguage II cable jack is in the side, so the cable comes out the end instead of the back- is there a way to turn the cable jack so it comes out the back?

Mine came with 2 jacks, one in back and one on side.

My ScanGage, and I thot all others, has two ports. One on the end and the other on the back. You looked on the back side jage????
