shifting solenoid failure

Was about to purchase a 2006 e350 SMB, when it threw a shifting solenoid on the way to be viewed. Can this kind if failure tell me anything about the condition of the van or just bad timing on a single warn part?

What are you calling the shifting solenoid--something inside the transmission or the gear shift interlocking solenoid?

If the transmission it could be indicative of the overall condition or lack of maintenance OR just something that failed before its design life. Full transmission fluid exchanges at 50K miles greatly adds to its life.

If the gear shift interlock that's typically just a blown fuse and nothing huge to be concerned about. Repeated blown fuses would be an issue but a one-time fuse problem is more about the fuse's quality than anything in that circuit.

There are two fuses controlling that device---inside fuse box F2.6 & F2.11 so make sure those show continuity or will pass current.

It was two solenoids and the wiring harness inside the transmission. All replaced but now van won’t go into overdrive. The coasting solenoid is throwing an error even though it was replaced. Starting to rethink the purchase. The van is in great shape, the 6.0l bulletproofed and strong. But there are a ton of aftermarket mods that are beginn8ng to put up red flags for me. Decisions decisions...

You should not be experiencing multiple shift solenoid failures unless one of two things have happened:

1) Transmission or engine main harness has damage. Usually abrasion on a metal corner, or a heat damaged connector. Or sometimes the harness even melts through.

2) The transmission has been trashed (bad tuning or stuck turbo vanes) and debris is getting into the solenoids. This would be easy to see by looking at or smelling the fluid. If it doesn't look cherry red, or it leaves sparkles on a rag when you wipe off the dipstick, I'd suspect other damage.

The transmission oil was clean and red and clear, no dirt or bits if metal. Will look at engine harness.
