Snow Chains for Ford EB 250 with Rear Wheel Drive?

Hi

I have an Sportsmobile upon a Ford EB 250 with Rear Wheel Drive.

Is it recommendable to put chains on all four wheels and not just the rear wheels?

What kind of chains are recommendable?

Thanks

Hi,
The purchase documents for my 2008 E250 contained a slip that said "Chains must not be used on this van, see the owners manual for snow options."

I haven't read the manual yet and so don't know what this is about. But it's a big enough deal that they wanted me to sign it and send it back to the dealership.

Matt.

Seems to me, running chains up front wouldn't really do any good since they're not pulling. Being that chains for 33" tires or around that size aren't exactly cheap i would just get them for the rear. The only thing i can think of them doing up front would be keeping you from sliding sideways. That being said, i don't know why you couldn't run them in the rear.. it's only going to benefit your traction. Our 2003 came with 1 single pair.

Hi Jeff,

Do a search on this site, there have been some threads talking about this.

Obviously it is a personal choice to drive a van in the snow or in snow storms. Let out some air for better traction, but have a portable air compressor to refill them! I got one from Pepboys.

I hava a pair of Road Blazer chains and my SMB is a 350 7.3 L Turbo diesel with two wheel drive.
It and the chains work great in the snow!
So I sugget that you get a pair of chains and practice driving with them.

Good luck!

Even though the front wheels may not be under power, chains on the front would help them, and the van, go in the direction you're steering. Not as good as chains on 4 driving tires, but better than on just two tires.

Interesting about the not not to use chains on the '08 E250. Last I knew SMBw sells chains. Personally, I prefer the Rud chains that Bill Burke sells (even though I don't have them).
