I've seen two 20 plus year old ones that were fine.

I concur!
Also, as another point to ponder with these true plastic rivets:

Be sure you want them installed when ya put 'em in.....because getting these rivets back out involves drilling their center out. Not difficult, as they're plastic, but for the sheer number of them on something like a penthouse seal.....

Not necessarily for this exact scenario (although maybe, I didn't have time to really look), but I've used this place in the past and they're a wealth of helpful retainer clips and fasteners. A lot of them are the exact OEM replacements you'd get from the dealership. I've found a few things here that I wasn't able to find anywhere else:

Before destroying at least the first one trying to figure out how the original (2004) fasteners are removed and reinstalled… Do you mind explaining the process? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hey JRO, the ones used by SMB are simply push in panel pins that have "fins" on the shaft that hold the pins in place. Just gently pry them out by inserting a thin metal edge underneath the cap (I may have used a putty knife). I ended up breaking about 1/2 dozen or so, but my local hardware store carried almost the exact same replacements. To avoid having the pins poke the rubber gasket on the backside it looks like SMB cut the excess off each pin from the backside after they were installed.

There are tools to remove those fasteners, sometimes called Christmas Tree fasteners.

As mentioned a putty knife or similar tool will also work.

I’m surprised these fastener is so simple, effective and have such longevity. Mine is a 2004 penthouse that needs repainting. All of them are solid after 15 years of snow, rain, heat, sun and lack of maintenance.

Sorry it took so long to reply Doublevan, got mine at an independently owned hardware store supported by Do It Best Hardware. Would guess that most hardware or auto parts suppliers would carry very similar products. When I replaced mine it sure seemed that if more than a few were needed, purchasing through SMB would have been more cost effective. I can’t remember exactly which size I purchased, so would recommend taking in your own to compare with those in the store.
