Would you mind sharing how they broke into your van? I've been thinking through security leading up to an extended trip in my van and am curious what method they used to break in.
Surprisingly easily, it seems. First they forced one of the door locks opened, bending the metal surrounding the lock. Then they forcefully ripped off the ignition lock and steering lock. This part just looked like brute force. They likely then just used a screwdriver to start the van.

Thats what I was wondering. I was made aware of this product a while ago that may have prevented the way they entered.

I'm actually just contemplating using the Punch Plugs as I can't even recall ever using my key to open the doors.

Great news that you got your van back, but a bummer they wrecked your interior. Perhaps you can look at the positive side, now you can incorporate all the improvements you have thought of as you used the van. REF just rebuilt his entire interior, and scanned the bare walls to develop CAD files for all his new cabinets. He may be able to assist you in getting new ones CNC cut if your interested. I think he once mentioned possibly going into production, but don't quote me on that.

This is where I will not insert my right wing comment
Glad you got the rig back and a lemonade out of the lemons as you get a fresh interior

But those hefty plates are suuuch a good idea.. why wouldn't that just be standard lock design?? haha

Econolines are stupid-easy to break into at multiple points (plastic license plate holder, anyone?). It’s amazing/not surprising that Ford never hardened them more given the $$$ worth of goodies that many tradesmen carry inside of them every day, and how long the van was in production.
