Sprinter penthouse top no longer compatible with fan

I was notified yesterday by SMB Austin that about a month ago they changed the way the penthouse top is manufactured, and that the penthouse top is no longer compatible with attic fans. The way he described it was the new design is a purely honeycomb structure and there is no way to mount the fan. Anyone else heard this?

Does anyone have experience mounting the deluxe attic fan on the wall of the fan instead of the top? SMB is just doing the top for me, Colorado Camper Van is doing the interior.

Have CCV do the top instead? They can install fans no problem.

I paid SMB the deposit several months ago now, back when CCV had their old design which I didn't care for, so I don't want to lose my deposit. Plus I still prefer the brand recognition and the several decades of experience you get with a SMB top.

I'm just surprised they implemented a top that can't accept a fan. I plan on plenty of desert camping so I definitely want that airflow!
