Thanks for all the suggestions. Decided to keep the tire stored in the undercarriage.

Bolt to door spare holder

Out of affordance, I found a spare carrier on amazon that bolts into the door to carry 265 spare tire. Would that be a bad idea?

Yes and no. That's the way SMB used to do them. You can dig deep in my Rusty build if you want to see pics of the SMB one, my rebuild of it and my mirror of it on the passenger side for a generator box. It worked but if you're running big tires and carrying gear that's a lot for the rear door hinges.

I didn't see your link but you need to mount one of these properly through the thick steel of the hinge and with a big backing plate on the inside of the door near the latch.

Thanks! I’m not sure but are these mounted on the hinges too? We have a 2006 E350 van so I’m not sure how you would mount through the hinges :/ Do you have a link to them online? Or an online/insta profile? I’m new to this forum don’t really know how to navigate it

Cool thank you both! So my understanding is that these SMB mounts are no longer in the market. Here is what I found on amazon and i intent to bolt in and provide back support (bracket, plywood). Rack name: Surco TF200 Tire Carrier for Ford

Swing-away tire rack

Yeah I don’t know why they don’t make the one I pictured for the 92+ vans any more. The one that’s still available is technically for the older body style, I think.

A somewhat common problem with the one I pictured is that the tire would crack the driver’s side taillight if the door was hyperextended even a little bit. I moved the wheel stud mounts on my carrier to fix the issue and then didn’t have any problems (after two cracked taillights [emoji35]).
