Thinking of getting a sportsmobile this year...

Hi all. I'm new. I have a small budget and don't mind buying used. What recommendations do you have? (I need seating for up to 6 and a dog). Thanks!

Sounds like you're going to need to find a passenger van, with 4X4 added? Look around, several have been posted here, most would have a Quigley 4X4, not sure if there's any configuration of a SMB that fits 6, at least not comfortably....
Sprinter??

Thanks for your input. Just in my hour of online browsing today, I did feel drawn to the Sprinter. Six seats is ideal but not necessary. I hate to admit that I know nothing of Quigley or 4X4 - I don't plan to do off-roading, but I bet once I got started traveling, it could happen.

Welcome. Just to start off you might want to look at a few threads.

I'm sure you'll find something out there. It sounds like you're after more of something based off a more passenger type van. There are vans I've seen with 4 captain chairs but those are slightly rare. This thread is about a build based off the need to haul 6+ persons:

Not sure if you are after a 4x4 or even a Ford van so a little more info for all of us might help.

Good luck on your search.

Dave

Yep, as Dave said, a Ford Club Wagon Chateau would be a good choice, but they are somewhat rare. A forum member has one for sale but not sure what you mean by small budget. Give us more of an idea and we can help more. A Chateau has 4 captain's chairs with a bench behind which lays flat into a bed (at least most of em do I think). You could easily seat 6 plus a dog, it's very similar to the seating layout in almost every minivan. Lots of storage space behind that rear seat too. If you added a pop-top later you could sleep 4.

Here's a link to the one for sale here, maybe out of your budget but you can get an idea of the seating layout

Like Dave said - More Info

What region of the country?

What do you want to do with it?
Tail gate at the football stadium?
Weekend trips?
Multi week x-country?

Do you want to camp in..
Commercial / State campgrounds w/hookups?
Campgrounds w/o hookups but facilities?
Boondock - dry camp on Fed land?

Do you like to travel to a destination & stay or wander to a new place each night?
How many days between moves?

Traveling with how many adults?
Children? Ages?

How much are you willing to spend?

That should be enough to get us started....

Re: Thinking of getting a sportsmobile this year...

I'm so excited by yours and Dave's responses. These are all questions I didn't even know to ask--now I need to contemplate them. I will say that I am a songwriter/musician and want to travel all over--not yet off-road, obscure places...but instead, places with venues-- beach cities, etc. Currently, I live in Atlanta and travel to Helen weekly - but I have family on the west coast and would love to get there too--and my favorite place is the beach - need to get there soon and often.

Budget is low at the moment, but I'm a Realtor too, so that can change in a day.

I will give thoughtful attention to your other questions and post again. I must say I'm excited by everyone's willingness to contribute ideas! Very grateful. Thank you!
