Tire Blowout

I'm heading to Wisconsin and had an eventful day yesterday.

First, I lowered my pent house top and the bolt in my U bars broke off so the passenger side of my roof fell down and the frame of the 'pushpad' broke. Not good. After a phonecall to paul @!SMB Austin and some propping up of the roof with a cooler and a bible we got the roof down and locked but the alignment is off by about an inch. I'm heading towards Indiana so I may have SMB Indiana repair the roof.
Then...
A tire blowout in my drivers side rear.
The tread blew off and severed my water intake hose and my coolant line. Luckily, we were a mile from Kellogg, lD and found a local tire shop that helped close off the water line and reconnect the coolant.

We r back on the road and will cruise thru Yellowstone today.

Tire Blowout

That's bad luck and kinda scary. On the upside if the two items you could get your hands on first were a cooler and a bible - you must be living a well balanced life. :-)

Good luck.

Re: Tire Blowout

Any signs before the tread let go? "Wait, I don't have a massage seat..." kind of thing?

Glad you're OK!

Re: Tire Blowout

Not good...What caused the top to fail? When it rains it pours?

What tires are you running? Do you think you had low tire pressure?
Glad it didn't cause a wreck. Good luck on the rest of your trip. I'm sure it will be good the rest of the way.

Re: Tire Blowout

Wow! Bad day, glad you didn't fly off of the road.
My dad recently had a newer BFG AT do the same thing and it damaged his front fender. I can only imagine what a strip of tread like that would do to a water line.

Re: Tire Blowout

And D or E rated tires? How many miles on them?

Re: Tire Blowout

Sorry to hear. Same think happened to me. Do search the forum for the discussions on E-rated tires.

Jäge. I did notice an odd vibration. Strange enough that I mentioned it to my co-pilot. We reasoned out that it was from the road construction. The section of interstate we were on was being partially resurfaced. I am thinking that a bubble in the tread was causing the vibration. Now I know but it's good for the forum to hear. I will definitely be pulling off to check if it happens again.

I'm checking tire model now. Will send shortly...

I have BFG mud terrain TA. Rated D. These tires were on it when I bought it. I did some research at that time on D vs E rated tires but enough people told me these tires were sufficient. Now I don't remember the difference. Will check that thread.

Tire Blowout

Tire pressure was between 60/65 psi (cold) and 25k miles on the van. So no more than that on these tires.
