We have a garage where van is kept and can raise the top when in the garage. So is it better to keep the top down or up when not being used for a few months.

It has to be a good thing for the canvas and for that matter the plastic windows. I would deffinately take advantage of that option if it was available to me.
Yeah, well one guy did that and one day he left out on a drive and the garage door wasn't tall enough to drive through SMB told me it cost him big time for something practically nobody does. The word was he had lifted the top to dry it out. I wonder how many have done that in their driveways and drove off with it up
The old saying...Damn, I knew I was gonna do that one of these days.

Make some red flags like pilots use with airplanes (flaps, covers, etc) and stick them with velcro so they hang down in front of the windshield and back window, to remind you to fix the top before you drive off.
Then don't forget to put the flags up again when you raise the top!
I used to have a set of colored Velcro straps that I wrote various words on; power, water, cable, blocks, ... When I camped and connected to shore power for example, i would put the corresponding Velcro strap on the SMB steering wheel. That way I wouldn't drive off without disconnecting the shore power line.
