Toyo Open Country Backorder- Options??

Just tried to order the Toyo Open Country MTs to replace my BFG ATs and they are showing backordered since March.

Anyone have any options for Colorado highways, forest service roads, and occassional light crawling that could also handle traveling into the mountains in the snow? Right now looking at the Goodyear Wrangler MT in 285/75/16 on a 2002 Quigley conversion.

(I have reviewed all the other threads but since the Toyos are my first choice and not available, figured I'd ask for the 2nd best tire out there.)

Thanks!

Adam

Nitto Trail Grappler M/T is the Toyo Open Country MT equiv
Nitto Terra Grappler is the Toyo Open Country AT equiv

Nitto seem to get just as good reviews as the Toyo's and are a bit cheaper.

Re: Toyo Open Country Backorder- Options??

I have the Goodyear MT/Rs on a 2002 Quigley in 305/70/16 size. Slightly narrow at 285 would be a good idea. On and off road performance has been good. With the diesel, I don't notice the road noise, but I know it's there. With your V10, something to consider. Haven't used them in the snow.

Jage just had another ringing endorsement of the Nitto AT's in this post: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5369

As he is another Colorado SMB owner, I'd put some stock in that.

Re: Toyo Open Country Backorder- Options??

I am going to be buying the Toyo MT's in the next month or so. I wonder if the bigger sizes are still available? I am looking for 305 or even 315. I would think the 285 is a more common size and might be on back order?

I currently run the Nitto terra grappler 315/75/16

Re: Toyo Open Country Backorder- Options??

The Nitto Terra Grappler MT can be ordered in but the wait is 3 weeks. They can get me the Toyo MTs in the 305/70/16 though. Same diameter but the width is approximately 1" wider than what I'm currently running. Anyone have experience making this jump and how it affected fender flairs, steering conponent rubbing, float in snow, etc

Thanks

The 305/70/16s are what I'm running. Haven't had any issues with the width, but then again I've got Deavers. I like the wider because I didn't want to raise the van anymore but I wanted bigger. You're welcome to come check it out of course!

Love my Toyo 305/70/16s also.. very close in size to a 285/75/16, like almost an inch but has a nice wider look to it then the 285's.

Re: Toyo Open Country Backorder- Options??

My Goodyear MT/R in 305/70/16 on American Racing Mojave rims rub on the frame at full lock, and under a lot of articulation and steering input can rub on rear of the Bushwhacker flares. I don't know if the same size from another manufacturer might behave differently, but that was my reason for thinking the 285/75/16 tires might be a better choice. They are both about 33" in diameter, but as stated above the 285's are about an inch narrower (285/25.4 mm/in = 11.2" vs. 305/25.4 mm/in = 12.0").

Apparently the Trail Grappler MT doesn't come in the 285/75/16. Closest was the 305/70/16. At that point, just easier to grab the Toyo MTs in 305/70/16. Ordered them in and going for the test fit tomorrow AM. Looked at my current clearance and it looks good but we'll see...

Thanks for your help everyone! Love this forum!

Toyo M55s are better than the MTs in every way except for deep mud.
