I wouldn't want to lift a spare tire on or off a van roof. That seems like a poor choice.

There is no good way to carry a spare and have extra storage in the back. One option would be to have 2 deluxe boxes and then use a hitch mounted spare tire carrier - something like the link below. It would require a hitch extension and it would extend the van length another foot or so. It would also make it more difficult to get into the boxes easily. Like I said, there is no great solution.

How about leaving your current rear Aluminess tire carrier and swing-away box alone, and instead coming up with some kind of front-hitch-mounted auxiliary storage box?

It seems that a full-vehicle width utility/storage box like you see commonly mounted laterally in pickup-truck beds could be made to line up nicely with the front bumper. (If it were affixed to a fairly simple and robust front-hitch-mounted piece of 2" OD square stock.)

Yup. That is it.

Think I'll avoid the spare on the roof. Probably go w the full roof rack and see how that goes.

But, I really do like those two boxes . . . .

You could always add something like this if you want to carry more stuff out back:

This was posted today by DaveB. It utilizes a lot of space. This is the tallest dual box I've ever seen. I know you want side by side boxes, but this does give two boxes in the back, along with the spare, leaving your undercarriage and roof free for other stuff.
