Van Covers

I'm looking for a suitable cover. My son makes all kinds of canvas covers and other items on a custom basis but says most material used does not breath enough . This can cause a heat buildup between the cover and the painted surface that can damage the paint so he is reluctant to make me a cover. Has anybody experienced this? Anyone have a custom cover made? What material did you choose?

Re: Van Covers

Chris,

Can your son add some vents to cover - so it can breath? Some simple slots with a piece sewn on the backside that is 1" shorter than the opening so it can't close completely. The piece on the back should be like a jeans back pocket - open at the top. Several of those should allow plenty of breathing.

Re: Van Covers

Mike,
I haven't had a chance to sit down with him and do a design. Vents could easily be done. I just have to settle on the material and see if he has time to do it. His info on heat damage came from another custom canvas fabricator so he was just relaying what he had heard.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Van Covers

Chris ,
Go to this Web Sight http://www.calcarcover.com and use their interactive tool . Then access the product information with regard to material types for your Son . I have had several custom covers made over the years by this company and been very happy with fit and finish .

Re: Van Covers

Thanks, I'll give them a call since their site only shows covers for an extended van and mine is an RB.

Re: Van Covers

That side zipper is nice, mine doesn't have that. I did see at the hardware store while looking for canvas repair kits, they sell a glue/stick on zipper like that and you can add it and then cut underneath. I thought it was a pretty cool idea, although I don't need any zippers anywhere at the moment!

Re: Van Covers

Gooseberry, can you tell me who made it, what the fabric is and what it cost? It's real close to what I'm looking for.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Van Covers

Its made by adco purchased through camping world for $480. Its a tyvek materia lthats waterproof an uv reflective. Its a custom and they called to double check my numbers. This van was garaged so I needed a good cover and was willing to pay to protect. You can go with a sunbrela for $800. ouch

Re: Van Covers

Thanks for the info...Sunbrella is not on my list but it seems that a good cover is going to be right in line with what you paid.
