van gutter question/preventative maintenance

last year i purchased a new van and after having rusty van gutters on my old van, i wanted to do some preventative maintenance. i noticed that overtime i wash my van there is dried pollen pools in the rear corners of the gutter and along the side where water doesn't drain after a rain, causing the dirt and pollen to collect and after the water evaporates, I'm left with debris pools. i have been cleaning regularly, but wanted an alternative to cleaning and waxing constantly..

is there any type of sealer or caulking or something i can fill the rain gutters up with to prevent the water from pooling in there? i don't want to use a cheap caulk that won't hold and will eventually rip up. I'm trying to think of what i can use to fill the gutters to prevent this from happening..or just keep on cleaning and waxing and hope the clear coat is thick enough to prevent any cracking and rusting.

86Scotty has used a polysulfide rubber compound to fill the gutters on a van or two, if I remember correctly. If you did around in his build thread for Rusty, you should find a post or two on the topic. Or perhaps he will chime in.

There is also a thread somewhere around here in which I went on ad nauseam about different caulking types and their uses. It's a great find if you are suffering from insomnia.

Tremco Vulkem 116, the sealer of choice for lots of Airstream restoration types. That's where I learned about it. It hasn't failed me yet.

Awesome thanks did they sand down your paint to bare metal and then apply the line x? Or just scuff the clear and apply strait to that?

Thanks Eric, when you applied it did you fill the gutter and level it/smooth it out with something? Did you put a thin layer or fill the gutter to the top?

The two that I've done with Vulkem I have just cleaned up the gutter with a good scrub down with Purple Power/Simple green and let it dry clean for a couple days. Then I laid a thick bead right in the center of the gutter and smoothed it into a nice cup with nitrile gloves on. Oh, I did mask off both sides first and it's still messy. IIRC one tube will pretty much do an EB van gutter all the way around. Warning, warning! It's messy stuff.

The milky looking stuff just above the Vulkem that you can see a bit of is some rust inhibitor I had around so I brushed it on first for good measure, but these gutters were pretty clean.

awesome, thanks for the info.. I've worked with that stuff on foundation walls. theres a company called superior walls that brings in concrete foundations and sets them with a crane. before bolting each wall together they put a bead of that between the walls and boy does that stuff hold. after curing if you have to get the walls apart that vulkem won't come off. usually the concrete ends up chipping off and the vulkem ends up staying whole. pretty strong stuff just never thought of it for this application.

I had rusty gutters, so they said that they ground it out (I wasn't there to observe). I'm not sure how much time they spent on prep, but it's been about 5-6 years now and I'm not seeing any signs of rust at the borders of the line-X.
I'm not sure it's evident in the pics, but it also wraps the drip rail edge and stops underneath.
