I found a KYB/Norco 8-ton side pump bottle unit made in Japan and is very well made. Google: All Tire Supply in Texas. It will extend 18-20"h (with screw extension). They are more expensive, but I'd rather not skimp on something so vital to potential roadside repairs in BFE. I carry two jacks + hi-lift sand base in lieu of the hi-lift rig in my Rover and will duplicate this in my SMB.
You can fabricate a solid axle 'craddle' out of std. pipe. Obtain the correct sides, then cut & weld. It fits over the jack head. Not only does this give you more inches in lift, but alot safer too. (Credit Dave from Aluminess for that tip).
Lots of good info, but would one of these bottle jacks help get unstuck while 4-wheeling? Or are they only good for changing tires on flat surfaces? Just curious...I haven't gotten stuck off road or had a flat in years.

Like all bad answers; it depends. Depends on how flat and level the ground is. Same can hold true for a hi-lift, which doesn't have the most stable base on uneven ground (though you can buy a special broad base). I've used a bottlejack to jack up an axle offroad on my Bronco, which has a high degree of articulation, making it very difficult to jack up from anything attached to the vehicle body. With a bottlejack, having a strong board to put between the ground and the jack can be helpful.

So, those of you carring Hi-Lift's ... where do you keep them? On the Bumper or thrown in the back? Anybody do the pieces parts thing? (take off the head, clamp and foot and stow the bar seperately)
