Because the O2 sensor talks to the ECU about how the engine is running. The ECU adjusts the air/fuel ratio to compensate. At least that is my understanding in laymen's terms.

I have a 2005 GMC extended body 4x4 high roof gas eater but if I stay mostly out of cities I typically get about 13.5. Single digits inside city.

Completely stock engine and exhaust.
A constant 15 mpg last tank was 15.8
Max speed 70 cruise speed usually 65 (retired and don't have to be anywhere tomorrow)
Occasionally will add DIESEL KLEEN +Cetane additive.

2016 Promaster 3.0l Diesel conversion done by SMB Texas. 23MPG.
I don't understand the fascination with 5 and 6 liter engines - unless you are towing, why do you need that much power, ESPECIALLY if you are offroading since all that does is spin the wheels into the ground.

2006 6.0 that achieves a constant 12.9 - 13.3. Motor is pulling a 11,500lb extended Van, with 35’s and 4:56 gears - run 2300rpm at 70mph. usually run 65mph since we do a lot of the long-haul freeway traveling between 9pm and 7am - keeps my fist from pounding dents on the dash since there’s a lot less idiots on the road.

10 - 12 MPG for us. The best mileage we got was with a strong tailwind -- 12.7.

Yep and a bad converter might also cause an exhaust restriction or blockage which also negatively affects the air/fuel ratio.

2003 7.3l with 6" UJOR lift, 4:11's, 35" tires, AdVanture interior (need to get it weighed), SMB top, and 4" turbo back exhaust:

80 mph...who cares, you are driving a 6" lifted van...fuel economy is the least of your concerns
70 mph generally consumes 10-12 mpg,
55 mph delivers 13-15 mpg.

I live in MT so you are always going over some mountain pass.
