The book "4-Wheeler's Bible" talks about burying something (such as a tire) to use as a deadman and says that the hole needs to be as deep as the tire is high and a slit trench needs to be dug so that the winch cable is pulling straight on the middle of the tire and not up. The side of the hole toward the vehicle needs to be vertical and undisturbed (difficult to do in sand). That is a lot of digging. I don't want to start an argument on line but airing down your tires might have been a major factor...

That, and being "fortunate" enough to get stuck in sand. I'd hate to dig a hole in hard packed dirt big enough to safely bury a piece of wood that's six feet long by 10 inches, two feet deep. That's a shallow grave.

It did take a little bit of time but I was forced to work with the tools I had on hand. Not fun but a good learning experience...

I just added a Phillips AED (automatic electric defibrillator) to what we carry. Fewer than 1 in 20 survive sudden cardiac arrest mainly because they to not get help in time. I figure I will most likely have to use it on a fellow camper along with CPR.

I actually decided to get it after the Central California meet-up when my wife asked what would I do if she had a heart attack.

They fit in the under-floor storage in the rear. These are adjustable height, and not necessarily 'large' in size. But they will give enough lift, using the wood block if necessary, to get the van up off the ground.

An AED is a great idea and I'll look into that Phillips unit. I've lost a couple loved ones and close friends to heart attacks and that seems like reasonable insurance policy for when I'm in remote areas.

decent AED is about $1,400 all in
(i have a Phillips, same as Air Force one, and very common in airports)
Priceless object when needed, I am sure a large percentage of the
guys here are in the Prime Sudden Heart attack age group
