Who here has a HAM license...

I ended up with one by default for work, but just reading adventureduo's post - I'm wondering if more people here have them. Are they mobile radios or portable? Whats your guys's ID?

Joe

Got a Yausu VX-7R HT in the rig, so no mounting issues. Less power, though!

Yaesu 2800m radio over here.

Radio's come in all shapes and sizes.. including face plates, full radios and hand held.

We run a 2 meter radio for many reasons, but one of the major ones is in case of an emergency.. we have SPOT satellite messenger too.

Ham radio

Hi,

I have a Yaesu 2m/440MHz and have been a ham radio operator for 50 years! Yes, time flies. Ham radio, not just 2m, but HF, is extremely handy when the you know what hits the fan and telephones do not work.

Sinbad,

aka Mike K6PZN

I'm KG4EYP, but I no longer have a rig. We used to live on a sailboat and that's when I got my license (that's why the Florida callsign) and used the radio extensively, pretty much just HF.

I actually was wondering whether there was a SMB or RV network that might make it worthwhile to get a radio. I will admit under pressure that I had a CB back in the early 80s. My mom made me get it so I could call for help in case of emergency.

Ham License

Hi,

I lived and cruised on a sailboat with my wife and 2 kids for a 1year. The ham radio, HF rig, was vital for communications with other hams in ports, getting info on weather and ports plus keeping in touch with family at home.

I was going to get my Ham License and a new Dual band radio for emergency purposes but my buddy says I should get into GMRS radios which work with GMRS repeaters, plus it works with FRS (Family Radios) with extended range.

The reason is I've been quite disappointed with the GlobalStar Sat phone last year. They said they have two new Satellites up but I haven't tested the coverage again lately.

What do you Hams think of GMRS radios as another or only option when Cell phones and Sat phones don't work out in the boonies?

The other option would be voip/internet via a two way Directway service I guess..but that SAT Dish is enormous!

I found a web URL that discusses it but wanted to see if anyone had additional opinions:
