Wife's 1st drive..

So we went to a comedy show and the wife drove us home. Her first time. She did great, and I had coached her well, and took down the side rear curtains so she would have an easier time. I sure love her. Up until tonight I was nervous about her driving it but as long as we go forward, and don't have to parallel park or backup she and I feel fine. How do you fellas feel bout that?

Parallel park my van in SF and Portland commonly. Backup camera since has made that much less stressful. It does as well as my 4runner. Sports car, not so easy for me b/c blind spots.

My wife drivees the SMB probably 30% of the time or so on road trips. No problems whatsoever. Only time she asks me to drive is into tight campsites or offroad. She even likes driving the SMB more than our old Chevy Avalanche (both have about the same footprint).

Re: Wife's 1st drive..

The vehicle is very easy to drive, once you are comfortable driving it. The learning curve is quick. My SO does become uncomfortable in ice and snow because she never really grew up with the stuff. Then again I am hyper vigilant when driving 5 ton vehicle on ice. That is just common sense. I trust her implicitly and have instructed her never swerve any vehicle when an animal comes in the vehicle's path. She even decapitated a dog as a result. Neighbor loved it when I replaced the front bumper of her Toyota in the front yard. I wonder of the 200 fatalities caused by deer, how many were loss of control due to swerving? The van is a very stable, fun vehicle to drive. Compared to my old Cheve diesel van from the 80's that would blow off the road whenever a semi-truck would pass us. With the weight and 350 chassi, the van does not flinch even an inch. Best toy I ever bought.

Re: Wife's 1st drive..

I bought my SMB in portland area and spent the winter there before relocating to CO. I highly recommend a backup camera for parallel parking -- it was my first addition.

Until we get around to buying another car our SMB is our only vehicle. Fortunately we ride our bikes pretty much everywhere.

First wifely drive was in the parking lot of the neighboring courthouse and police station. (Used for the large empty lot on a Sunday.) The unexpected presence of shift-changing police officers added some excitement.

So far, I've successfully driven to the local brewery and back.

Re: Wife's 1st drive..

Actually, my wife was the first one to drive our rig. She drove it back home from San Diego (where we bought it) to Las Vegas. We bought our SMB while on vacation camping at the beach, so I had to drive our Suburban and tent trailer back while she drove the SMB. This was before I put the sway bar and steering stabilizer on it, so she didn't like driving it at all. We haven't gone on any real long trips since then, so I always drive it when we use it. Hopefully some day soon we will be able to take a long trip and she can share the driving. I have no problem with that. She's a great driver!

Re: Wife's 1st drive..

Went winter camping skiiing. I parallel parked near NW 82nd ave in Portland, visiting Tanuki (highly recommended restaurant). After dinner, my SO got in and as we drove off, the bikerack on the Baja Box was sheared off by a telephone pole . Between the turn angle and the rack sticking out the side...did it in. Lesson learned.

My EX-wife has never driven my van. And probably never will.
