That doesn't sound good. Any better options out there?

I had done extensive research on portable hot water units a few years ago and ended up buying the Coleman portable hot water heater. Overall, I have been very pleased with it, other than the large size. It's been several years since I did my research and I'm baffled that someone hasn't come up with a will thought out small unit that really heats water. The Coleman runs on a green propane bottle and it has decent pressure. The water gets hot. I'll keep it until it breaks and hopefully by then there is a smaller replacement that works as well as the Coleman. By the way, you don't have to use the water bottle that comes with the Coleman, just stick the pump in a Scepter can or whatever.

I would like to direct your attention to the 13 second point of the this video about the Mr Heater Portable Hot Water Heater.

I have no association with anything in this video.

After a week in the desert, a shower was damn near mandatory, so I decided to get the Zodi out again. I finally got a hot shower out of it, but I had to start with hot water in the jug. As recomended, I recycled the water for about five minutes before it got hot enough to use, but then it was fine. Still, when I started out, it was mid day and the water was not all that cold, yet it still took about five minutes to warm up. It seems to me it should work faster than that. Mrs A/T says a replacement unit arrived yesterday, but I'm about 1000 miles away, so I'll have to wait for the final judgment until I try the new one.

Later in the video you can make out the name, Into The Wild Adventure Rentals. When I googled it seems to be a guy in the Denver area that rents out his personal van. I wondered if he is on the forum under a different name. Sorry to hijack the thread.

No problem, discussions tend to wander.
