North entrance of Colockum Wildlife Area, primarily used by hunters ... but also by mountain bikers, ATV-ers and wildflower types like myself. The Colockum Wildlife Area was purchased by the Washington State Department of Game in the mid-1950’s from several landowners, including the Arthur Coffin family. Funding for the
purchase came from the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Program. The purpose of these
acquisitions was to expand the winter range for the Colockum deer and elk herds, and to perpetuate
and improve the upland game bird habitat.
