Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

I came for the shot of the top sitting in the front yard... but alas didn't find any redneck art.

Van looking good though- a page back there are two shots of the Aluminess with the rare black watermark. You should consider turning that to follow the seam and putting it on the side in vinyl... it would look sharp almost exactly like it is.

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Jage, much to my dismay it was moved to the backyard yesterday....I preferred it in the front yard and even threw a few beer bottles around it for good measure....

Some form of logo etc will be going on the van when done. Aluminess brought up doing an aluminum water jet logo and mounting it to the roof rack. Dave has a smaller one on his van and it looks great.

The watermark is a necessary evil of my line of work. Our images are stolen on a daily basis. Now I just have my export setting out of my photo editor auto watermark. Ruins the online appearance but our Fine Art buyers appreciate we are protecting their investment. Probably more info than you were looking for...

Working on the bike rack today. Hope to post an image soon....

Turn the old raised roof upside down, stick it on the front lawn, and put a "Boat For Sale" sign on it.

Not sure where to post this...tried a search and possibly missed it....

Wanting to siphon gas out of the tank. Bought a small siphon kit and the hose goes half way and stops. Is there a filter or theft stop in the tube possibly?

It's a 2006 with a TransferFlow Tank.

The T-F tank uses the Factory filler neck. I believe the anti-siphon screen is in that filler neck.

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Mike, think I'll pull it apart in the morning and take a look.

Got our prelim interior build quote and specs today. Trying to sort it all out now.....

Took an hour off today and drove down to the bay to see if I could find where some noises were coming from in the van.

Took a few pics of the mountain bike rack we installed the other day (I say we but mostly my dad). Making some mods to the original design with bar placement and parts. Should be a much cleaner and sturdy design when done. Using aluminum standoffs from the photo biz to create risers for the racks. Couple more images of the winch and then a few sunset images while down there.

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Success....kind of....

Since we purchased the van there has been a very annoying clicking/taping noise almost continuously. I have spent a lot of time trying to find the origin of this noise and have finally found it. QuadVan installed a sway bar disconnect on the van just before we picked it up. After eliminating many things (Including removing all the Aluminess parts from the back we found there to be a small amount of play at the disconnect. Used a GoPro all over the place underneath to narrow down where it was coming from. Quick video from today that finally led us in the right direction. Good times!!

Not sure how we are going to fix the issue with the product until we can get ahold of them. I think it's made by JKS manufacturing. Even though I don't have the fix I feel much more relaxed that I know what it is and if needed can just put the original parts back on.....

Great video of the undercarriage in action. Lots of moving parts to watch. I am amazed that you could figure out which one it was. Glad you found the source that noise would have driven me nuts.

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Larrie, It was driving me crazy. I probably spent 5 hours removing and moving things around to find it. Someone with more mechanical experience would have probably found it much quicker.

It was interesting to move the GoPro all over the place and watch all the moving parts. I have a bunch of video clips from the process now including one where I hit it with the swing arm fairly hard. I try to post that one in a few minutes.

Brent,

That new top is growing on me. At first it looked too tall, but now I like it.

Hope to see you on the road,

Mike

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Mike, it's still tall for me....

Working on building the roof rack with one extra lower support bar to minimize it's height. We will see what happens.

I am enjoying the extra walking height inside.

On my way to the beach to let the hound run around while I tinker on the van.

Quick Disconnects...

Had an email exchange with JKS today, the manufactures of the disconnects I have been having issues with and they started they were not designed for the weight and size of the vans. Quick look at their website and it looks like most of their gear is make for Jeeps.

Going to call QuadVan tomorrow and see what can be done.

Anyone have quick disconnects on their van?

Hey there Brent,
Van top looks great! Not sure if you compared Fiberine to Sportsmobiles Voyager top, but I'm going to switch my penthouse pop top for a fixed top in the next couple months.
Actually going to redo my interior as well, but was wondering if you compared the the two manufacturers and why you chose Fiberine.
I have a 2006 EB Diesel. I'm really looking forward to be able to stand up at all times inside my van since my rig is my daily driver for my business. Thanks for the pictures of the rear, I'm in contact with Aluminess to do the top rack along with adding the box like yours as well as the bike rack.
Any info you'd like to share in regards to fixed tops, I'm all ears. Anyone else out there with an opinion, please share. Thanks in advance!

Romeo

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Hi Romeo, I did not compare the two companies. I was looking for a top similar to the one that came on my van but just a little taller so I went with Fiberine again. I believe the Voyager is a little taller than I wanted. I think it's 24"? The Fiberine I went with is 20" and the one mine came with is 16".

Part of my decision to go with this top is based on possibly adding the pop top feature in the future and it's what Colorado Camper Van suggested would work based on my needs.

Being able to stand up right away and the entire length of the van is much better than expected for my needs.

Sportsmobile's 4x4 comes with Quick Disconnects, not sure what the origin is. I've always wanted an Currie AntiRock swaybar instead, and researched it to the point they provide solutions for full size vehicles, but not to the point of what would fit on the van...

New Years weekend in Big Bear....

Great time in Big Bear for the New Years weekend except....on the way down the hill the check engine light came on. Engine started running rough. Fairview Ford was close to the bottom of the mountain and stopped in to have it checked out. Coil went out. They had it fixed in an hour and continued home. Great service from those guys.

Great experiment. Shows that there are good people around as opposed to what you hear on the news.

Can you post some photos of how you have have your camera mounted in the van? Also what video camera are you using?

Hi Larrie, I just stuck a GoPro Hero2 in the window with the suction cup it came with. They come with a bunch of different mounts that are easy to stick anywhere. Check out their website for great examples.

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

The back 1/3- 1/2 is going to be expanded metal. Solar panel in front of that and in motion satellite at the very front. That is the plan for now but that may change a little in the next day or two.

Having hardware installed just incase we put up a second solar panel.

The Brentster:

Cool vid
Sometimes i felt guilty for the design time they did, they rock

A thought:
the bar are too big for a bungie
yu may be using other stuff to tie down, but you will do some quick and dirty w/ bungies

i used "slats" on my floor, and had holes drilled in em
I WISH i would have had a bunch of small attachement points welded to the bottom
of the upper bar.... just a thought

also
my rack is made for a size solar panel that is no longer available
i WISH i would have had it build with some adjustmentabilty....

i use this from Harbor freight on the back of wilson
just cuz i got two ladders, it still is a PITA to attach stuff
these last me a year and cost $10

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Great info BW!

Going to make a call just incase.

Most of the back area will remain open for my camera work. Just enough space up there for full extension of the tripod legs. May also use it for landing the chopper on.

Having a full length ladder made by them to reach the top rung. Also putting one more towards the bottom just out of harms way.

RV Interiors Visit today...

Great visit today to RV Interiors in Spring Valley today. Spent some time with Jeff looking at Peter & Katherine's build that is in front of mine. Invaluable to have a similar build going on just before our is to start. Took a few images for them and as reference for me.

Really like how Jeff is open to any idea you have and roll plays the pro's and con's of each. Walked away with some new ideas. I have a month or so till our build starts and will be visiting Peter & Katherine's a few more times.

Just as I was leaving I got a call from Kenny at Aluminess that the roof is ready to install. I could not pull it off today but will tomorrow. Look for a new time lapse of the install in the next day or two.

Took the rig to Big Bear this weekend and put the mountain bike rack through it paces. The hardware design works great but needs some slight adjustments. Photos on that coming soon.

looking good and thanks for posting the pics....

the sides of that mobile was it in finish form or was it just the wood and still needing fabric covered over them????

haywoodphotomaccom 02-01-2012 09:30 AM

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Roof rack was installed yesterday and all went great. I'll post a few photos later today.

On the way out yesterday from there I noticed smoke behind me. Stopped and looked like a leak of some kind dropping on to the muffler. Just stopped at my mechanic this am and see a small hole in the lower transmission line leaking on top of the muffler. That line was laying on top of the muffler and created the hole.

Assuming this is not correct in the first place and will make some adjustments. Thoughts on the best correction method?

Heat shield wrap around the lines, slightly move muffler if possible, bend lines to clear muffler or all the above?

Thoughts?

I would do all three.

I'd probably start at a good muffler shop. Have them move the muffler to put as much room between the line and the muffler as possible. Be very careful trying to bend the line. You could end up putting a weak spot in the line.

Think of the most outback, remote place you've ever visited. Thats where it's going to fail on you if you don't fix it properly. Having a critical fluid line that close to the muffler is just plain WRONG.

Edit.....I just checked out your octacopter video on youtube. That thing is beyond too cool. I'm impressed!

haywoodphotomaccom 02-01-2012 09:52 AM

Re: New to me QuadVan interior build out about to start.

Thinking the same thing John. The muffler must have been moved when the conversion was put on. Cant imagine it came from the factory like that.
