Re: Can you covert a garbage truck to an RV?

What a bizarre thread.

The first pic is of a very expensive Unicat. Garbage trucks don't have awnings and side entry.

Unimog is a truck company owned by mercedes. Some Unicat campers are built...

Re: Espar Hydronic Coolant Heater -Can't it Heat Your Cabin Too?

There are threads on the expo forum where a diesel engine and a single webasto/espar hydronic has provided diesel coolant warming, cabin heat, and hot water (via a marine tank or flat plate heater)....

Re: New SMB ride quality

I would like to see air suspension seats and a proper snorkel. I've never seen either on a smb.

Re: Spare on Roof - EB PH

What do you guys think of a rack in front of the PH? Does anyone have a measurement from the end of the penthouse to the windshield (on center)?

I might be able to think of an easy way to get the...

Music, Dash Receiver, and power

Are you using your dash receiver as your only music system?
Did you wire it to the house batteries?
What wiring decisions would you change?

Re: Heavy duty alternator

That thread references the Xantrec regulator, but Ford alternators are P type with internal regulators. Can't use the Xantrec.

The Ford upgrade is probably a good idea. But it won't do much...

Re: New SMB ride quality

The problem with doing it at initial construction is uncertainty about the final weight and distribution, I think. I'm surprised people have completely re-done their springs without trying replacing...

Re: Planning to purchase soon. Here come the questions....

Might it be better to have the 4wd conversion done first? That way SMB knows exactly the space they have to work with when running lines underneath (if any).
Also, I suggest you figure out the tax...

Re: Heater

I don't believe the propex is necessarily a better choice than a US furnance like the atwood. But it has more installation options (at twice the price). What I don't like about US designs is that...

Re: EB 71 Living Space: Walkthrough Floor Plan

Odd they don't show EB71 anymore as a standard plan. I've pretty much decided on EB49, which is an isle plan with the gaucho forward behind the driver. Since I don't need a third captains chair I...

Re: flat plate versus propane hot H2O

A 6 gal marine water heater is a flat plate with six gallon storage (won't freeze fast) plus a 1500W electric heater for about $250-300. Reducing water storage by the same volume leaves little space...

Re: 12V fridge vs. 12V ice chest

I have an engle 45. It is expensive, but there is no doubt it's well made. I had buyers remorse until it was delivered. But actually seeing it "in person", the cost is justified. Not that it's...

Re: Solar panel maintenance

That's true with older panels. Newer, better panels can bypass shaded cells. I'm believe the SMB Kyoceras have this feature. Cleaning newer panels is good but not as important.

Re: Long Term Storage

The most conservative approach is to disconnect your starting battery from the house batteries and connect the engine battery to a trickle charger like the "battery tender junior". Especially if it's...

Spare on Roof - EB PH

Anyone have their spare forward on the roof in front of the PH? Anyone think about putting a rack on that part of the roof? A rack would hang over the windshield somewhat to fit a 35" tire laid flat.

Re: flat plate versus propane hot H2O

Ill add to this thread the choice of a marine water heater with electric. Like a flat plate but will hold the temp for at least 12 hours. It's a good reserve water supply too. Depending on the...

Re: Splitting batteries?

I thought the rule of thumb was to not go below twelve volts, and below 11.7 the battery is damaged so that it will never recharge to the rated voltage (14.7 ish). That's why batteries boil - the...

Also, is there some kind of insulating subfloor that would works well in this type of van?

Re: Layout for extended touring, not off-roading -- suggestions?

Yep, you need a design that goes across the back door. Since you shorter a higher bunk with storage under is good. Outdoor stuff could go in the back part of that space and be accessible from the...

Re: SMB Indiana visit

Anyone have a recent build at SMB Indiana? I'm looking at doing a 4x4 Ford SMB. I've noticed some east coast residents are customers of SMB california.

New SMB ride quality

I was wondering how you guys with newer 4x4 SMB find on-road ride quality? I was in a 2001(?) SMB 4x4 and found the ride pretty rough on road. Any sign of improvement in the latest 4x4 conversion?...
