Re: Mud Flaps Needed

Mine are the cheapest I could get from J C Whitney, but I fabricated some hangers from galvanized sheet metal and have installed the flaps with cheap panel fasteners. Since I usually seem to forget...

Re: Atlas Gear Ratio 3.8:1 vs 3.0:1

Add another vote for the 3.8/1. The additional torque multiplication's not as important, as I doubt anybody's going to be climbing 45 degree slopes in a 10,000#, expen$ive behemouth, but on really...

Re: When to lock hubs or not

Unfortunately, it seems like most of the times I need to lock the hubs and engage the front axle, I'm already stuck. Like the manual says, the Atlas can be challenging to shift unless you're moving....

Re: When to lock hubs or not

I got T-boned at an intersection a few years ago by a subcompact about 400 miles from home. The impact was just in front of the right rear wheel, and the car submarined the rocker panel, hit the...

Re: Terrible Smell - Dead Animal? - Please Help!

We've had problems with an awful smell developing in the tank of our water heater when it was left full for a month or two between trips.
I think it has something to do with the CaCO3 in our hard...

Re: To solar panel or not to solar panel

We ordered our SMB prewired for solar, which consisted of a charge control panel mounted on the base cabinet for our galley, and a receptacle above the right tail light. I was goosey about the...

Re: Some may want to know-46 g. tank info

I lost my patience with spending 10 minutes squeazing the last 6 gallons into my 46 gal tank a couple of years ago, so duplicated Eric Badger's modification. It's a real PIA to drop the tank, but it...

Re: Extra driving lights

I have the same "old eye" problems with night vision. I tried some higher (100W) wattage halogen bulbs first, but they melted the connectors.
Last winter, I converted to Xenon bulbs. The Plug and...

Re: 6.0 Powerstroke EGR valve after 40k miles

We have had a recurrent EGR valve code (P0401) several times in our 6.0 PSD proir to 20 K miles. It has always been serviced under warrantee and/or gone away with or without adding cetane booster. ...

Re: What did you do to your SMB today?

Dropped the (46 gal) fuel tank to retrieve the magnet I put in to collect any metal filings I didn't get out after my tank vent modification a couple of years ago. I got tired of the 10 minute...

Re: Colorado October Meetup '09

Sorry about missing the thread until now. It sounds like most folks are too busy to make it the 24th and 25th. Both the Black Canyon and the Sand Dunes are interesting and lightly used in the Fall,...

Re: Engine Preoiler

I've had a Masterlube preoiler tapped into a main oil gallery on an overhauled vintage engine while it's been waiting for the rest of the car to be ready.

Every month or so, I've been drawing a...

Re: Looking for advice from mud flap users

Thanks Jage for the kink comment on my mudflap system.

I got really tired of the sides of the van being plastered with road yuck that the flares didn't catch.

I got JC Whitney's generic flaps,...

Re: How many REALLY use the full capability of the SMB 4x4?

We've probably used the FULL capability of our SMB version only once or twice, but it's saved us several hundred dollars in recovery charges each time. We don't get stuck intentionally, but the...

Re: Sportsmobile vs. Truck Camper

We went from tents to VW Eurovan to pickup/poptop slidein to SMB.
Sleeping on the ground and crawling out of a warm sleeping bag on a cold AM is OK when you're young, but not at 60+.
The Eurovan...

Re: Moab Planning Forum Rally 09 May 11-15th in Moab

Our daughter's now at 36 weeks and having intermittant contractions, so Tarr participation is still not a sure thing. Our van is also ready to go except for last minute provisions. Final decision...

Re: Porta Potti usage info?

The wife is the main user of ours, as I tend to rely on the bushes and a shovel. Ours is good for about 5 days, and I prefer to empty it before it's full. It is a pain to clean, requiring MULTIPLE...

Re: Photovoltaic panels

According to the vendor, the panels will tolerate being flexed a bit. I've forgotten how much. The rubber cabinet feet raise the panels about a centimeter off the roof surface when compressed...

Photovoltaic panels

We ordered our van with solar prewire, but no panels, as I was uneasy with the co$t and durability of the flexible panels SMB was installing, and didn't want to add another 1.5 inches to the height...

Re: Pull Pal/Land Anchor

I got the 11,000 # capacity. It took me a while to figure out where to carry it while:
1. having it accessible when needed.
2. having it secure from falling and/or being ripped off
3. keeping the...

Re: Forum Rally 09 May 11-15th in Moab

If I can convince Mary Anne that we won't spend the whole rally jouncing around in our van instead of getting out of it to do some hikes, we'll probably arrive midday to early afternoon on Monday the...
