WOW! I was just visiting the Sportsmobile website and read something about 2013 being the last year for the Econoline van so if we wanted an Econoline based Spotsmobile we had better hurry up and...

Re: Delete Water System?

Much smaller. Fresno does about as many vans/month as Indiana does in a year. Since they don't do as many vans, every one is a custom (even the standard floorplans) and they don't have an issue...

Re: Delete Water System?

That is exactly what I am talking about. I was watching a video yesterday where Alan Feld of SMB West was giving an interview and he said that an SMB could be done in stages; you have your own van...

Re: Delete Water System?

Yeah, I would normally be going to places that I would be paying for; NP campgrounds, state parks, Forest Service, even, God forbid, KOA. I am not a 4x4 rock climing fire breather. But if I were...

Delete Water System?

Thinking of ways to save $$ on a SMB conversion...I know I can buy a used cargo van and have SMB do the PH top. In their standard plan they make it clear that the propane system may be deleted for...

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

Thank you. I was wondering what the head clearance was for the GTRV. I don't think a 6 footer could siit on the rear bench with it closed if the SMB PH allowes you only 3 inches. GTRV'ers???

Re: Very Basic Camper

That sounds cool. I am thinkiing about a Chevy 1500 AWD passenger van with a GTRV T top, removing the rows of seats and then I can just use a coleman bed and whatever camping supplies I need. It...

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

I believe that GTRV will add just a top, but have not confirmed this. Regarding costs, here are my relevant costs from two years ago.
Standard conversion (including V-Top, propane, stove, fridge,...

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

Yeah I sent tthem an e-mail and Mike from Sebastopol responded right away. Then I asked a couple more questions and he responded quickly again with price estimates etc. I had no problems with them....

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

So how do you like your GTRV? I am leaning toward the GTRV "penthouse" style top. I have read way too many posts from SMB owners complaining about their PH leaking. Did you get the full conversion or...

Re: Ford or Chevy Van?

Thanks folks! I love the pics of your rig. Yeah there are so many options, decisions etc. I love the idea of the stock Chevy AWD because of being able to make it through the snow when visiting...

Re: Ford or Chevy Van?

You were right about that. I could have sworn I saw the 3500 with the AWD option. Oh well...I am learning why most of these conversions are Fords....gotta be a reason :f2:

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

OK I heard back from Mike at GTRV in Sebastopol, CA. and he told me that the full "westy" conversion would run in the high 20's range, so I would assume that includes a top. Boy, this freedom of the...

Re: Ford or Chevy Van?

That info about Chevy is good to hear even though I don't know what a floating axle is or locking differencial. :a2: However I am sure those are both good things or you would not have mentioned...

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

Thanks Joey. I figured it couldn't be all that difficult. I like to keep things simple and when you start adding electronic gadgets, modifications etc..there is just more to go wrong in my opinion....

Ford or Chevy Van?

I have noticed that most of the SMB vans are Fords. Is there a particular reason for this? I know that SMB states that they will convert either Ford or Chevy but I still haven't ever seen a picture...

Re: Other Penthouse Roof Manufacturers??

OK you GTRV owners, you guys are holding out on the big secret. Just how much does one of these things cost? And I am curious as to why GTRV doesn't just post prices on their website like SMB does....

Very Basic Camper

I have been drooling over the Sportsmobiles on their website for years but the cost is just too much for me and I don't really need or want 110 electric or water. I have looked at van conversions...
