Not necessarily a bad diode within the rectifier plate. I assume that 270 amp alternator is a Leece-Neville ( or perhaps another aftermarket) and the way the regulator handles the alternator warning...

Yes, you could have two alternators with each alternator charging its own battery or bank....that would be an ideal situation but depending on the engine, a second alternator isn't always feasible.

The bearings are typically rated for much higher rpm's than you could normally expect to hit so the answer is no, at highway speeds, the bearings should be fine.
