Re: My new old van

Thanks for the kind words y'all! This weekend I'm planning to take it off pavement for the first time; let's see what shakes loose!

My new old van

Here are some long-overdue pictures of the van I bought in January (which immediately broke down). Thanks to the help of many on this forum (especially E350 and BajaSportsmobile) it is more...

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

More installation photos. The plan from here on is to drive the van a bit to see how it feels, retighten the Pitman arm, then get an alignment.

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

I got the new Pitman arm and put it on. Comments in the photos.

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

Boo. That does line up with a wide tooth on the FD500 arm. I'll scrub off the gunk and look closer.

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

It's been so educational I can't stand it ;-) Aha, I thought it might be a 1 5/16" nut. I ground my 32 mm crowfoot wrench out to 32.7 mm and it came off just fine.

You like a wrench like this? ...

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

I'm ready to be done fixing things. It's been six weeks and I haven't even gotten it smogged yet. (Wonder what delightful surprises may await me there.....)

All photos are just with my Nexus 5...

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

BajaSportsmobile called it: the sector shaft has 32 teeth and the Pitman arm has 36! Or rather had; I don't think this particular specimen will fetch very much on eBay. Because the arm was, you...

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

Sounds like quite a saga! In my case the Pitman arm is loose already, so I'm hopeful it can be extracted once I get a wrench that fits the nut. Your nut was oversized for the socket too, huh...

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

Okay, had some fun shopping for new tools and, thanks to viewtopic.php?f=39&t=15522 (https://www.sportsmobileforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=15522), got the drag link off.

Now the challenge is getting...

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

The seller thought this van was an E-350, so I guess I have to check... Hoping I don't have to disconnect the steering box fluid hoses.

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

It's a drop Pitman arm to go with the 4 inch lift. The arm is marked FD500, so I assume it is one of these: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/exp-fd500

Re: Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

Thanks for the input! I would indeed like to check the spline teeth inside the Pitman arm hole, but because the I-beam is so close I couldn't get the arm off without removing the steering box. Then...

Tightening Pitman arm onto steering box "in situ"

My new used Sportsmobile is a '94 Ford E250. The seller installed a 4 inch lift and must not have a torque wrench, because many nuts were loose. The Pitman arm looks like this:...

Re: New motor or/and transmission for a '94 E350? (351W / E4

Van is running and home. Thanks everyone for your advice! Next up: fix the half-baked suspension lift--but that is for another thread.

Re: New motor or/and transmission for a '94 E350? (351W / E4

It's good that good mechanics exist in the world. But, besides the extra expense, I didn't have two weeks to wait for Woods to build one up for me, so I went with the source the mechanic likes, LKQ...

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

A couple more photos from visiting the shop. They say the input shaft on the transmission is locked up implying further damage within. A nice chunk missing from the casting so welding would be more...

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

I'm plumbing the vehicle's service history for the last shop to touch the transmission. I have records for a rebuild in 2001 (at 48k miles), but the mechanic doesn't think it can be that old. ...

Cell phone pictures are inherently crappy, but I think we could be looking at the crack here.

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

We have a diagnosis! Somehow a socket wrench socket got lost inside the bell housing. Or maybe it was wedged onto a bolt and left for dead. At the exact moment I happened to be rolling up my off...

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

The poster's experience certainly seems to match mine, so I will be investigating the possibility of a valve falling into a cylinder.. It looks like maybe the valve covers will come off without...

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

Let me paraphrase to see if I get what you are saying.
If the flex plate can be rotated, I can access all the nuts and unbolt the torque converter.[/*:m:1u0kc6r7]
Because the crankshaft is locked...

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

Yup, the starter motor was the first thing I had pulled off. It's fine.

The torque converter has not been pulled off yet, but I'm curious about that too. It seems like it's hard to get to...

Re: New motor for a '94 E350?

Duhh thanks for the catch! Fixed. Sounds like timbersteel's engine has not been running for a while before he bought it, but yeah I see the similarities.

The more I think about how the purchase...
