I've had both on Mt. Hood. Studs are slightly better on ice and hardpack. Both need chains when it gets bad.

I've always used studded conventional snow tires (all around) but for SilVan I splurged and got Bridgestone Blizzack W965 E range. We didn't have a lot of snow last year, but as far as I could tell...
