Your cautions have caused me to do more research on driving on sand. I haven't found any accounts of other folks camping at Race Point Beach, but I found this picture on Google Earth:

Thanks for all the tips and cautions. I'll stock up on all the items you've mentioned, and then keep my fingers crossed. I'll report back after the trip, if I make it back!
