I thought for sure that I had found the problem, but after I drove it with pliers removed I could still
hear the spring banging in there. SMB Austin apparently doesn't pad the channel all the way...

I, too had a PH installed on my Sprinter recently and also had a noise that wasn't supposed to be there.
