So even when you're in reverse, to get the rear bumper lights to come on, you have to use the switch?

Mine come on with reverse or when the switch is toggled.

You can look at the switch itself, there are 3 wires. One side is power, one side is power from the reverse lights, and the center is out to the extra lights on the bumper.

They are hooked up to the van reverse lights...

They are hooked up to the van reverse lights through a switch which also overrides the lights to on.

A SPDT ON*ON switch with the center wire going to the bumper lights and one outside wire...
