Yakima makes a system called the 'Showboat'. Its a roller setup that attaches to your cross bars and is adjustable. You can move it out over the back edge of the roof and side to side. It works great...

I climb on top to load and unload kayaks all the time and the former owner also was on the SMB to load and unload his bikes. No apparent damage so far in 6 years of use. The former owner had the...
