Looks like you've got some good advice for the PNW. My $.02 on field guides: You'll end up buying all of them. However, I prefer Sibley for its size, drawing quality and intro sections for each group...

We haven't used the SMB yet but look forward to it. Favorite spots depends totally on where you live or want to go. In the SW, southern AZ is a hotspot for neotropicals visiting north in the summer....
