Well, with Gaia GPS, you don't only have USGS but many other maps like USFS, Map Quest, Open Hiking Map, World Imagery, etc. I espacially like the last one since you can see the kind of terrain...

I understand what you mean. I don't like not to have some hard map in VLV either. But usually my paper maps are more global, not so detailed, just in case of an issue of the iPad or to plan the route...
