I'd never seen one of the pro-built ladders either, so I don't know that mine is how others have done it previously, but it's pretty basic.

The bottom two beams are welded to a piece of 2"x1/8"...

1" EMT. I think it was about $10 a stick at the local hardware store, so I'm guessing you could get it a bit cheaper at a big box.
