Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Not sure how flexible. Depends what we compare it to. In unitized body construction much of rigidity comes from body itself. A stiff box on this chassis could be quite stiff -- not unlike semi...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Ran across this information showing that low-floor FWD ProMaster should be much easier to pull off than a RWD Mercedes Sprinter.

It appears these guys have been building low-floor chassis based on...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

I agree completely. On the other hand I also think that the new ProMaster with FWD might make it possible if any company thinks it's worth the effort. From drawings the ProMaster's fuel tank seems...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Darryl, great van. I really enjoyed your gallery showing the amount of engineering and fabrication involved to create that type of dropped floor. No doubt quite complicated and probably very...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Since the E-series have only about 53 inches of vertical height compared to 64 inches for Sprinter and ProMaster low-roof vans, to get enough standup room the floor has to be dropped a lot more than...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

The blocks you describe will work on vans with body-on-frame construction like Ford Econoline, but they are not applicable to vans like Sprinter, ProMaster, and future Ford Transit that rely on...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

If it is possible at all, I'd expect ProMaster to be easiest because of FWD. Plus as you stated its lower overall height would make it fit through 8-foot garage door with ease.

As to Roadtrek...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Lowering the entire floor would be much better, but would require a lot more work. That's where the chassis described in initial post would come in for RV use. Eventually MB might incorporate...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Agree it would be a specialty market. However, a slight drop like shown above on older Roadtrek was relatively inexpensive. I tried to look up cost from Sportsmobile but couldn't find it; probably...

Re: Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

Let me put the question in proper context for clarity. I was thinking of a very common modification that has been done by many companies. Below is a picture I found of an old Roadtrek. Don't see...

Mercedes low-floor Sprinter chassis and similar options?

From the first time I saw a Dodge-based Xplorer class B camper van with a drop floor I’ve been interested in low floor designs as “one” option to raising the roof. If not to create all headroom at...
