More water heater related stuff....

I recently picked up a Xantrex Linkpro battery monitor from another member here (thanks SteveW!!).

I have been experimenting with using it to heat water in...

In an effort to assist member 1der with his solar and water heating sizing, I did a simple (and extremely boring) experiment with my water heater yesterday....and also because I was just curious.......

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

....thinking about the BTU content of a gallon of gas on the train ride this morning.....let's compare 200 amp-hrs of battery capacity to a gallon of gasoline....just for fun.

Applying ohm's law...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

Well, it it were perfectly insulated (or a thermos, almost perfect...) once it was heated up is stays hot forever.....so heat it up when driving or plugged in then use it when you need it.....kind of...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

Yes, roughly........if we assume 25 amps through the element for an hour, and if it takes an hour to heat the water and tank based on the rough calc above, then 25 amps went to raising the...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

E350: 99.9% of my camping does not involve shore power so I may be partially screwed anyway, although maybe not......one test is worth a thousand expert opinions........

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

Ray:

1. Certainly, the mass of the steel vessel has to be heated as well (I did not include this in the earlier ballpark calc), and steel has a fairly high specific heat capacity. For fun I...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

E350: Yes, you got the math right!

A few notes about the heat losses....

I had the thermostat cover off the whole time with a bare section of the tank exposed, ie no insulation. The factory...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

...for readers with a keen eye (or for those who actually read the earlier posts), one will notice that my adiabatic (no heat loss) calculations from a few weeks ago were almost exactly 1/2 of...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

OK, I finally got the 12V setup tested. I ordered a few incorrect fittings and I'm still sorting out the final configuration, but I managed to get a basic setup up and wobbling.

The test setup...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

I got a little more accomplished on the water heater today.

I got the 12V element installed and removed the 110V power cord and installed 10AWG wires. I also wired in a relay in the van to...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

Chance: We are disagreeing with you because modifying water heaters can be very dangerous business. The fact that you are downplaying the potential things that can go wrong is worrisome to me.

I...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

well.......it just occurred to me why the thermostat has 2 sections..........

To meet both boiler code (USA) and IEC (Euro) requirements, the water heater must have an overtemp cutoff and that is...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

E350: Yes the red button is the overtemp cut-out. I'm still not quite clear why the thermostat has two sections, perhaps another layer of redundant safety features......

Pretty much all...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

.....OK, back on topic.....

JWA's comments about the thermostat prompted me to investigate further.....the thermostat is rated for 40A for 120-277VAC service and 25A/480VAC service, so we should...

Re: Dual Voltage (12v dc / 120v ac) Small Electric Water Hea

Correct, watts is watts.......although circuit breakers are thermal devices and rely on current to pop open. Current flowing through a wire (or a circuit breaker) causes resistive heating which...

For this reason, a long time ago,...
