Has anyone out there who kept the stock steel/chrome bumper removed the black plastic shroud from below it?

I keep thinking about it, but have resisted the urge. I'm concerned that once I get it...

I kept the "whimpy" stock bumpers. but have a front hitch receiver, so if I need to snatch someone out of the ditch, or be snatched, that's where it can hook up. The back bumper is also stock, but...
