I'm in Cantwell at the RV Park until Saturday. Went into the park to get a couple of more days, but Teklanika and the whole parked are booked solid because of the holiday.

Re: Alaska 2014

I'm in Alaska! Tok, to be precise. After groceries and fuel I will decide on my next stop.

Dave, last time we were in Valdez we saw a Bald Eagle go after a momma and 7 baby ducks. He made about 10...

Re: Alaska 2014

Got the van back last night. This morning it was very reluctant to start and had a Check Engine Light on.

Back to the dealer. Tech found a spliced wire had broken. Probably when changing the...

Re: Alaska 2014

Many things like to fail when far from home. My converter for the GPS took a dump. I discovered a broken wire in the cable, and if I turn it just so and tape it in place it works just finr. Then the...

I'm just south of Prince George. Tomorrow I head towards Hyder. Should get there mid-day Monday. Spend two nights and then North to Whitehorse. Geez, only about 1500 more miles to reach Alaska (Hyder...

Re: Alaska 2014

I'm in Washington, and on my way.

It always amazes me how many 'sounds' you can hear when you get a distance from home. But, so far the van and its new engine are running fine.

Denali or bust!...

Re: Alaska 2014

Every thing they look at needs replacing. Tested the injectors - 3 leaking.

Checked main/rod bearings - scored from fuel in the oil. Who knows what else is still hidden in there.

Since a new...

Re: Alaska 2014

I talked to the shop on Tuesday, and the van will be ready before I get back to California next week. The price will hurt, but I really miss my SMB! Tent camping is more tolerable, SMB camping is...

Re: Alaska 2014

Dave,

The fuel routes through the head to the injectors. A crack or a too rough surface can allow fuel to leak into the oil. The bad part is they have to pull the engine out the front to work on...

It is apart now. I just have to decide on the repair path. They can do it while I'm gone.

Re: Alaska 2014

I may still make it. Three weeks in the Jetta, home to the van repaired and head North and hope it was put back together correctly! It's all an adventure - at least afterwards that is.

Re: Alaska 2014

We will have to wait and see iff I make it to Alaska or not. Van is in the shop with fuel in the oil (1 gallon in 200 miles!). Tech thinks I need new heads. Pull the engine, tear down, replace heads...

Re: Alaska 2014

This is my 4th Alaska trip, and I've never had trouble getting fuel. I start to look for fuel when I have 150-200 miles left in the tank.

Re: Alaska 2014

There have only been a couple of times when mosquitos have been an issue - both times in the woods and near a slow creek. In those places we kept the doors closed!

In my mind the screens would be...

Re: Alaska 2014

On the way to/from Alaska, is anyone interested in going up to Eagle Plains or Inuvik?

I wouldn't mind going, but might like some company on the very remote Dempster.

Yes, LTX AT2s. They are very tough tires, surviving rough gravel roads from Alaska in 09 to Labrador in 11 and many, many road miles with no tire issues. Reasonably aggressive and quiet on the...

Re: Alaska 2014

Great!

It would be nice to meet up at some other places also.

Anybody visiting any of them? Any timeframe?...
